Pole Position
Pole Position is based on all aspects of men, women, and the phenomenon of speed, skills and striving for success, involved in the world of Formula 1.
As in every series there is a central cast of characters who play essential roles from beginning to end. One of them is Janet Ross, a young woman just turned 19 with black, shoulder length hair. Full of spunk, this gutsy tomboyish daredevil is both attractive and provocative without even realizing it.
We meet her for the first time when she pulls up in her antiquated VW Golf GTi model 1981 at a garage in a grimy industrial area somewhere on the outskirts of Glasgow. Minutes later she is working as a mechanic on a car lying underneath the chassis on a dolly. During the coffee break her co-workers are cracking one dirty joke after another but they respect Janet, but immediately switch to talking about football when she walks into the canteen. The customers they deal with are mainly people who own expensive and exotic cars and who have tons of dirty money lining their pockets. One of them is a certain Bo Fang who invites all the grease monkeys to come and race go-karts one Friday night at his Party Centre named ‘Revolution’.
That evening marks the start of a brand-new but also dangerous career for Janet Ross. She beats the hell out of all the other drivers! None of the other mechanics can keep up with her. They are all impressed by her driving skills. And not just Janet’s co-workers!
Bo Fang offers her a weekend job. All she has to do is drive three passengers to a location at night in a fast car, wait until they get back, and then drop them off safely somewhere else. Putting her foot to the floor is only an option in case of an emergency. There is one strict rule: no questions asked!
It‘s only a matter of weeks before everything goes terribly wrong for Janet Ross when she becomes an accessory to a serious crime involving the kidnapping of seven year old Sally Crespo, the daughter of Jo Crespo who owns a Formula One racing team.
She is sentenced to three years in prison. Her working class and underprivileged background makes it is hard to imagine that Janet Ross will one day become Formula One’s first female world champion ever.
But before that she still has a great deal to learn when she steps into the world of glitter and glamour that is so much part of Formula One.
Janet Ross had been used to living and working in a male dominated environment but now suddenly an entirely different set of rules applies. Through a series of trial and error she manages to hold her own and is blessed that everyone values her technical abilities and prowess behind the wheel. By sheer coincidence she finds herself being allowed to test drive one of Crespo’s racing cars, and then decided to set her sights on fighting to achieve her goal of racing in Formula One!
